Laboratory Automation and Biomanufacturing Engineering

Improved reproducibility, fewer external influences, higher throughputs without losing laboratory flexibility and sophisticated sterile certified environmental conditions: these are only some of the requirements to be met when developing automation solutions in the field of life sciences. The interdisciplinary team of 25 scientists working in the Department of Laboratory Automation and Biomanufacturing Engineering at Fraunhofer IPA addresses these challenges. We have the necessary expertise to implement innovative end-to-end solutions, from the concept through to the validated process. By combining our own key solutions with gold-standard components, we supply top-quality solutions that are reliable, flexible and suitable. Our ultimate objective is to ensure benefits for the end-user.

Expertise

Automated Laboratory Devices and Systems

Laboratory automation solutions range from smart stand-alone devices all the way to complex interlinked systems for screening processes and manufacturing applications in pharmaceutics and diagnostics. We support these developments, from defining specifications to realizing devices for pilot production.

Automated Cell and Tissue Culture

Automated cell and tissue culture is the most challenging discipline in laboratory automation. Automation systems have to be capable of handling cells with the utmost care as well as performing cell analytics and controlled process sequences with dynamic scheduling. This is all part of our everyday work.

Liquid Handling and Related Robotics

The correct, efficient and swift handling of liquids is a basic automation requirement for processes in life sciences. We have in-depth knowledge of all the devices and technologies available from renowned manufacturers and complement them with customized solutions, such as the I-DOT nano dispensing technology.

Laboratory IT

Since laboratories are data factories, their infrastructures need to be efficiently incorporated into process sequences. We develop control architectures compliant with the SiLA standard and are an authorized SiLA Test Site. We also create solutions to integrate automated process sequences efficiently into day-to-day laboratory operation.
