Manufacturing data safe in the cloud
Already at the Automatica trade fair in Munich this year, together with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Fraunhofer IPA presented the joint venture "Virtual Fort Knox", a federative IT platform for manufacturing apps. A further supplement with connected exhibits, such as cloud navigation, cloud picking and an exoskeleton, will be showcased in London at the "Discover" fair, to which over 10,000 interested parties have been invited. The aim is to demonstrate the advantages of networking manufacturing components, as well as the added value of a production facility based on Industrie 4.0.

Reference work of robotics published in revised edition
More than 200 reputable authors, 15 new chapters as well as a multimedia collection with links to more than 700 instructive videos: These are only some facts about the impressive second edition of the renowned, in 2008 firstly published “Springer Handbook of Robotics”. The reference work offers latest research results as well as application-oriented knowledge about the whole field of robotics. Martin Hägele, head of department Robot and Assistive Systems, contributed the chapter “Industrial Robotics” together with other authors.

Electromobility on a new level
In addition to big players like Daimler, Siemens, Infineon and BMW, Fraunhofer IPA is one of 50 partners in the recently launched “3Ccar” project, which will run for three years and focus on integrated components in electric vehicles (EVs). The objective of the the project, which is funded by the European Commission (EC), is to bring a new technical level to electromobility and increase the market relevance of EVs. Fraunhofer IPA is joined by the Erlangen-based Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems and Device Technology IISB as a project partner. The focus of the collaborative work undertaken in the “Smart Battery Module” is powerline communication, for which Fraunhofer IPA has already been granted a patent with its intelligent cells.

Collaborating with the European Commission
During a one-day round trip, Khalil Rouhana and Dr. Max Lemke from the Directorate General for communications networks, content and technology (DG Connect), visited Fraunhofer IPA as well as Trumpf and Festo. Both are representatives of the European Commission and work on Günther Oettinger’s staff, who has been European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society since 2014. Talks on the day covered topics such as the application of open-source approaches in establishing European standards for Industrie 4.0, opportunities to encourage the development of innovative business models among SMEs and the interconnectivity of industrial data spaces, which Fraunhofer co-founded. In addition to the discussion, there was also a guided tour of the IPA testing facilities.

Prof. Bauernhansl appointed to EFFRA Board of Directors
The interest group European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA) has entered into a public private partnership (PPP) with the European Commission. Its role will be to define the research and development program for manufacturing technology within the scope of the »Horizon 2020« project. At the seventh general assembly in Brussels, Belgium, on May 21, 2015, Prof. Thomas Bauernhansl, Institute Director at Fraunhofer IPA, was voted onto the »Board of Directors« at EFFRA.
