Behavior of coatings under the influence of moisture and/or temperature

Coated parts are exposed to constant or fluctuating climatic conditions (humidity, temperature). We investigate effect of this stress on physical and visual properties (adhesion, blistering/cracking, changes in color or gloss).

Estimation of the adhesion strength of coatings to a substrate

A pressure water jetting test is conducted to simulate the effect of cleaning a coating with a pressure washer. The loss of adhesion is evaluated on the basis of comparative images.

The cross-cut test is used to assess the resistance of coatings to separation from the substrate. Although this property depends on bond strength, the method is not used to measure this.

Abrasion and scratch resistance of a coating to a load/stress caused by brushes, sponges or other materials

Various laboratory test methods are used to assess the abrasion and scratch resistance of coatings. Among other things, a decrease in gloss due to brushes scratching the paint surface can be simulated and evaluated in a laboratory-scale car wash

Resistance of coatings to mechanical action (hardness)

A multi-impact stone chip test device is used to assess the resistance of coatings to the impact of stones. In addition, depending on the material it is made from, a hand-held, spring-loaded ball or disc burin is used to evaluate resistance to scratching or writing.

Resistance of a coating to various test substances/chemicals

Depending on their intended use, coated plastic parts can be exposed to, and should be capable of withstanding, a variety of liquid, paste, or creamy substances. Exterior components are particularly tested for their resistance to fuels, water, bird droppings or tree resin. With interior parts, on the other hand, the focus is on resistance to cleaning agents and cosmetic products, such as hand cream and sunscreen.
These should not cause any visible alterations, such as a change in color, swelling or loss of adhesion.

The fogging and odor characteristics of automotive interior components are extremely important. In this context, fogging refers to the condensation of evaporated volatile compounds from vehicle interiors on the windows, especially on the windshield. Odor characteristics describe the tendency of materials to release volatile substances with a perceptible odor when exposed to certain temperatures and climatic conditions.
