Planning painting facilities

 

In the Department of Coating Systems and Painting Technology, customer-specific painting processes are developed in alignment with facility technology and the development of the painting material. Our key competencies lie in planning and optimizing painting processes and facilities right up to start-up of the finished painting facility. In order to find the right processes and facilities, we have developed the computer-aided interactive planning tool CoaTway® (computer aided strategic way of planning paint shops). This involves the following steps:

If a company is looking for a new surface system for a product, first of all planning aims are jointly defined and a procedure is agreed on.

In a pre-study, the status quo is assessed and optimization measures identified.

In the design phase of the project, alternative technologies are developed and their technical design and cost-effectiveness evaluated with CoaTway®. Coating tests and quality assessments are then carried out to evaluate the achievable coating qualities and feasibility of the preferred technologies. The aim is to narrow down the various technology alternatives for the later planning phases.

Based on this, capacities are then planned for various feeding systems and painting technologies. To assess material flows and environmental footprints, the status quo data are considered together with test series conducted with the new technologies in our technology centre. Via capacity planning and the determination of material flows, the facility units required for the technologies can be ascertained on the basis of performance specifications. Investment costs and energy costs can also be calculated.

The planning team then uses CoaTway® to make a swift and targeted comparison and assessment of the technology alternatives under consideration. The results are then validated under real conditions after each experimental planning step (e.g. coating trials and quality tests). The key aspect of the new planning method CoaTway® is planning games. Here, technology alternatives can be played out and their costs for the customer assessed (investment and operating costs), even if quality requirements change. To implement new technology alternatives, supplementary experimental tests and development work may prove necessary. We conduct the planning, approval and start-up phases in close collaboration with equipment manufacturers of coating systems.
