XaaS in industry: business models, strategy, and implementation

In uncertain times, investments are often frozen, while waste, rework, and energy and material consumption continue to drive up costs. The question is therefore not whether to invest, but how: how to achieve measurable results more quickly with manageable risk. "As a Service" (XaaS) enables precisely that: start small, prove the benefits, then scale up in a targeted and low-risk manner.

What is XaaS?

Everything-as-a-Service (XaaS) describes a business model in which companies purchase IT and operational services instead of buying and operating them themselves. These include: Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), which are typically provided via cloud technologies.

Instead of owning their own hardware and software, companies use resources flexibly as needed and scale up or down quickly. Billing is often based on usage or subscription (pay-per-use/pay as you use). This reduces investment costs (CAPEX), increases cost transparency, and shortens the time to productive use compared with traditional investment and implementation models.

What are the main components of XaaS?

  • SaaS (Software as a Service): Provision of ready-to-use software applications over the internet; users access the application directly without installing software or developing their own platform.
  • IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service): Computing power, storage, and network "on demand" as a scalable basis for workloads.
  • PaaS (Platform as a Service): Development and runtime platform for applications with tools, databases, and operating components.
  • DaaS (Data as a Service): Data provision, integration, and processing as a service-based offering.
  • MaaS (Manufacturing as a Service): Transfer of the XaaS principle to production: Use manufacturing capacities and capabilities as needed via digital platforms.

What advantages does XaaS offer industry?

  • Impact with manageable risk: Instead of starting with a large project, start small, demonstrate measurable benefits, then scale up in a targeted manner.
  • Faster from pilot to operation: Standardized building blocks and interfaces shorten implementation and make XaaS productive more quickly.
  • Plug-and-play across systems: Standards ensure that services, data, and components interact seamlessly (interoperability).
  • Grow with you instead of rebuilding: Scalable architecture supports new customers, locations, and additional use cases (scalability).

Our workshops on XaaS:

Tap into XaaS potential or optimize and secure existing XaaS projects

  • For companies without prior experience in the XaaS context: We identify relevant potential, develop concrete XaaS business model ideas, and prioritize the next steps.

    Contents (Explorer)

    • Keynote speeches and practical examples
    • Contextualization in the corporate context
    • Ideation: Development of concrete XaaS business model ideas
    • Evaluation and prioritization
  • For companies with existing XaaS ideas and implementation plans: We systematically validate your project, clarify open issues, and develop a feasible action plan.

    Contents (stress testing)

    • On-site assessment (optional / as needed)
    • Stress testing of the XaaS vision and business models
    • Derivation of specific areas for optimization
    • Action plan for the next implementation steps

Investment and scope of services

Both workshops include:

  • A preliminary meeting
  • The implementation of a one-day workshop
  • Final documentation and presentation of results

The investment is approximately €4,500 in each case. Additional consulting or implementation services can be added as options.
