Cell Culture Analysis and Control Technology

Today‘s automated cell culture systems function “blind”. Random microscopic controls of culture vessels are performed much less frequently than is the case with manual processes.

In order to recognize errors and thus save on costs, or intervene to regulate processes, technologies for automating the analysis and control of cell cultures are needed. Together with other Fraunhofer partners, we implement a patented system for the automated analysis and control of automated cell culture processes. This comprises:

  • Online confluence measurement of cell cultures to individually ascertain when they are ready for cell culture passage
  • Integration of automated cell counting
  • Online definition of relevant process parameters, such as pH, oxygen content and glucose content of the culture medium.

This enables our automation solutions to make autonomous decisions about subsequent process sequences, therefore increasing culture process efficiency by up to 50 %.
