Energy Systems and Energy Storage

The transformation of industrial energy systems is a key enabler of climate-neutral, efficient, and resilient production. Our research focuses on intelligent energy systems across all industries – from small and medium-sized enterprises to globally operating corporations. In addition, we address battery cell production for stable and cost-efficient large-scale manufacturing of diverse cell formats, as well as hydrogen technologies that can be efficiently produced, utilized, and integrated into industrial energy systems.

In close collaboration with industry partners, we develop application-oriented solutions along the entire value chain. Our work ranges from the digitalization of battery cell manufacturing and the development of innovative cell designs to sector-coupled, cross-vector energy systems. Furthermore, we conduct detailed simulations of hydrogen systems and support their transfer into efficient industrial production processes.

Tailored energy systems

Our research focuses on the advancement and integration of DC energy systems, the identification and utilization of potentials in the thermal energy supply of industrial production processes, the development of digital energy system models, and AI-based operational optimization. From load management and on-site energy utilization to system flexibility, we work closely with industry partners to develop application-oriented solutions that deliver measurable value for specific industrial use cases.

We offer expertise in the planning and design of industrial DC power grids, microgrids, and power flow control, and we operate a DC laboratory for practical research and development.

At Fraunhofer IPA, we conduct research and development in close collaboration with industry partners to develop scalable solutions along the entire value chain. In battery technology, our work ranges from material selection and cell design to digital twins and pilot-scale manufacturing. In the field of hydrogen systems, we develop advanced manufacturing processes, establish digital models of stacks, and validate efficient production processes under industrial conditions.

We develop process and quality assurance technologies for battery cell manufacturing - including inline recycling and sustainable, recyclable cell designs. Our model-based approach brings innovations from the lab to the factory floor.

 

Hydrogen Technologies

Our research ranges from the digital modeling of stacks to new manufacturing processes and the optimization of end-of-line processes. We digitally integrate products and manufacturing and strategically incorporate hydrogen into industrial energy systems.
