Characterizing Batteries and Supercapacitors

© Fraunhofer IPA

The specific performance of materials and electrodes can often only be analysed effectively after their integration into cells and/or modules. Cells and modules can be designed and characterized in many ways at Fraunhofer IPA. Next to small test cells for the material characterisation larger electrode can be validated within pouch cells.

To characterise battery or supercapacitor cells, different methods are applied depending on the production step concerned. To characterize the electrochemical properties of electrodes and prototype cells, the scientists test batteries and supercapacitors using standard methods of voltammetry, such as cyclic voltammetry CV), chronopotentiometry (CP) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
