The IPAnema Safe is a novel cable-driven parallel robot with a high level of functional safety designed to safely train ship crews for challenging offshore scenarios. Fraunhofer IPA developed it for the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) to enable different training scenarios.
Training ship crews for demanding offshore operations is dangerous and highly dependent on weather and sea conditions. To create safe and reproducible training conditions, the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) provides onshore simulators for safe training. These trainings can include scenarios involving a swinging crane hook or a moving ladder for a pilot boarding a ship in turbulent seas. With this new cable robot, for example, the motion of a swinging crane hook or a ladder can be realistically simulated. Thanks to its advanced functional safety and the safety functions Safely Limited Position (SLP) and Safely Limited Speed (SLS) for cable-driven parallel robots, developed by Fraunhofer IPA and implemented with Performance Level e (PL e), the robot platform can move safely above people during training scenarios.
