Industry and manufacturing in the process of change
Industrie 4.0, i.e. what is known as the fourth industrial revolution, is a great opportunity to keep production and value-adding in Germany and possibly continue to expand it. To become convincing and effective on a broad scale, concrete and reproducible examples from practical experience are required. Only then will the term remain selective and quantifiable and not be watered down.
Twenty years ago, Fraunhofer IPA began to address the issue of flexible, self-organizing and better-interacting production structures. As early as 1992, the institute director of the Fraunhofer IPA at the time and later president of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Professor Hans-Jürgen Warnecke, published his experiences and thoughts on corporate management in his book “Die Fraktale Fabrik” (the fractal factory). Today, industry applies the knowledge and expertise acquired during this period.
