Our understanding of business transformation

In view of digitalization, the ability to change plays a key role: companies must be adaptable in order to remain successful in the long term. By business transformation, we mean the technological transformation of business processes and the distribution of tasks. Fraunhofer IPA helps companies learn how to change and how to successfully implement change projects. We take a holistic view of the organization - the social system and how it is influenced by the technological and digital world.

Challenge and benefits

  • The social, digital and physical worlds are growing closer and closer together. The result is systems that are so complex that they are almost impossible to manage. New methods are needed to shape these in a targeted manner. New technologies call for adapted processes and organizational structures. Change destabilizes social systems - proven processes, learned rules, culture and values are overridden - the organization becomes less efficient and less focused.
  • The right change and communication concept ensures a targeted, sustainable transformation. Those affected are activated and involved, cooperation is redesigned and common values are created – the organization regains its efficiency and focus.

Our approach

  • Computer scientists, engineers, social scientists - different disciplines often speak different languages. A common language and shared thought models are the basis for mutual understanding and the ability to measure transformation. What is special about our approach is that we make the unconscious - such as values, norms and informal agreements - conscious and describable; only through this is change visible and controllable.
  • New, improved workshop methods combined with clear models and data will enable all stakeholders to characterize and shape the change in our social system.

Current state of the social system “organization”

Organizational diagnostics: use of instruments which illustrate the current state of the organization as a social system and enable the influences of the digital and technical world, as well as instabilities and deficits, to be visualized.

Social negotiation processes

We support the necessary social negotiation processes by providing workshops, individual and group coaching, team development formats, as well as communication initiatives in the form of roadmaps.

Stabilization through action-guiding agreements

Stabilization of the social system through action-guiding agreements in the form of visions, missions, target systems, structures, processes and organizational instructions.

Control and further development

Change controlling: changes are made visible and evaluated on the basis of jointly-developed thought models and key indicators.
