Safe Human-Robot Interaction

General information

Over the last few decades, the field of robotics has developed rapidly. Numerous robots have left the factories and now assist man with everyday tasks. Safety is a fundamental requirement when it comes to physical interaction between humans and robots.

Expertise and sample projects

For many years now, as a member of the ISO standardization committee ISO/TC299, Fraunhofer IPA has been involved with the development of safety standards for service robots. It played a major role in drafting the new guideline ISO 13482 “Robots and robotic devices: safety requirements for personal care robots”. The guideline ensures that the safety of all innovations and new solutions are assessed, and that all robots developed are safe to use. Further projects include:

  • Bosch and Siemens Hausgeräte (BSH): development of a new mobile robot system for the autonomous testing of dishwashers, with risk-free hand-guidance of the robot by the operator
  • Project VaSiMa: development of validation procedures for safe manipulation with mobile service robots
  • Care-O-bot 3: enhanced operator safety by separating the work side of the robot (with arm) from the interactive side (with tray)

Services

  • Feasibility studies and development of solutions for the safe implementation of planned mobile robot applications
  • Identification of relevant EU guidelines and standards on product safety
  • Individual risk assessment during the development of a new robot solution and assistance with CE label certification
  • Research into and identification of safety requirements for new application fields
